Many problems can be easily fixed on your own. Before submitting a request for service, click on the links below for easy fixes to common problems.
NO HEAT
Try these steps first before submitting a request for service:
Do not heat your home with your oven.
Locate your thermostat and check that it is in heat mode and is at a temperature setting higher than the temperature in your home.
Try moving the dial setting on your thermostat up or down a few degrees.
Check that the circuit breaker is in the “on” position or that the fuse is not blown
Check that the “switch” on the furnace itself is in the on position. It looks like a light switch.
Check for any flashing lights located inside the little window inside the furnace
Is your gas and electric service turned on or has WE Energies disconnected your service?
TOILET OVERFLOWING
Turn the knob located near the floor, on the wall, underneath your toilet tank to the right to turn the water off. If no shut off valve is present, go to the basement and locate the water meter. You’ll find a water supply line coming into the house from the outside. Between it and the water meter is a shutoff valve. On the other side of the water meter is another shutoff valve. To shut off the water to the house, turn off the valve located BEFORE the water meter, on the supply side.
If you act quickly enough, have a plunger handy and plunge the toilet until the clog loosens and the water begins to go down. Residents will be charged for toilet and sink clogs that require us to dispatch a plumber.
DRAFTY WINDOWS
Rubber Weather Sealing:
You can buy strips of self-stick rubber weather sealing at a hardware store. Cut long strips down to fit your window dimensions, then peel and stick to the frame to close any gaps and keep out drafts. Pros: Cheap, effective, minimal alterations to appearance of windows. Cons: When you peel away the rubber strips, they can damage paint or leave a sticky residue. To avoid deductions from your security deposit, repair any damage to paint or woodwork.
Window Insulation Film:
You can buy window insulation kits from a hardware store. Kits usually include plastic shrink film that is applied to the indoor window frame with double-stick tape, then heated with a hair dryer to shrink the film and remove any wrinkles. Pros: Cheap and effective. Cons: Gives windows a cloudy, shrink-wrapped look.
Layered Curtains:
Use heavy fabrics or layered curtains over the windows to keep out drafts. Pros: Looks good, can be matched to your home decor. Cons: Curtains can be expensive and heavy drapes can block out light.
NO HOT WATER
Check other sinks to determine if there is no hot water anywhere in the home. Submit a service request.
LOW WATER PRESSURE COMING OUT OF SINKS
The aerator on the faucet may be clogged. Simply unscrew (without scratching the faucet) the aerator off the faucet. Turn the water back on. If the water comes out strong, then the problem is a clogged aerator. Remove the screen from the aerator and rinse out. Remember to put the pieces back in order. If the water pressure is still weak, submit a service request.
